Review: Ocean Motion is the third CD in the environmental themed "Celebrate Earth" children's music series on the Recess label. This compilation album gathers together thirteen songs by thirteen different artists, and as is the case with most compilations, it is a mixed bag. Highlights include the Caribbean tinged title track by Melinda Caroll, the funky "Estuary Life" by the always enjoyable Banana Slug String Band, and Marylee's adaption of the jazzy "Fever" into the "Sea Lion Shuffle." While there is a little sense of jumping onto the "Green" bandwagon, most of the songs and artists turn in some really nice tunes for environmentally conscience kids and parents. These include Rosie Emery's tuneful and educational "The Coral Reef," the bluesy "Sun Going Down on the Ocean" by Linda Book, and a group called Let's Go Green, who's "We Love the Water" takes a jam band approach to Earth friendly songs. There are some misfires, including Penelope Torribio's over the top performance on "Shark Song," and Michael Mish's sickly sentimental "Dolphin Song." Still, one cannot help but love Jack Pearson's outrageous puns on "Otter in the Water," in which the singer's Boston accent allows him to rhyme the words otter with water. The album finishes with The Sunflowers' lovely, folk tinged "A Day at the Beach." Ocean Motion joins Celebrate the Earthand Growing Veggie Soup as part of Recess Music's on-going children's music compilation series.
